For centuries Dejima was the Japanese window for the West and vice versa the little island was the window to Japan for the West. This was possible through the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Even today every child in Japan is thought about the VOC and Dutch Trading post of Dejima. Mr. Marten Minkema travelled to the island and made this documentary for the Dutch Radio (in Dutch). Part 1 was aired last sunday: deel één van ‘Terug naar Deshima’.

Kawahara Keiga - kamerscherm "Uitzicht op Deshima in de baai van Nagasaki"
14:00 -17:0004-07-2018-22-07-2018Museum VolkenkundeMuseum Volkenkunde, Steenstraat, Leiden, NetherlandsEen onbekend en volstrekt uniek topstuk van de Japanse kunstenaar Kawahara Keiga (c.1786-c.1860) is recent ontdekt en aangekocht door het Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen. Conservatoren troffen het manshoge kamerscherm (acht panelen van samen bijna 5 meter breedte) van grote kunsthistorische betekenis aan in privébezit. De voorstelling toont de baai van Nagasaki met daarin de Nederlandse handelspost op het eilandje Deshima in 1836. Het wordt een sleutelstuk binnen de Japan-collectie van Museum Volkenkunde.
